Pillowland - Jam City

Trip pop pwerus, angerddol i’r blwch teganau yw Pillowland, offrwm hudol diweddaraf Jam City. Hyperpop tywyll yn rhegi a rhincian yn erbyn drymiau trymion gyda llinynau lloerig gitarau trydan yn tasgu tuag atoch bob hyn a hyn. Gallai hyn yn hawdd fod yn ormod o gawdel o ddulliau, ac i gynhyrchydd llai abal mae’n siŵr mai felly fyddai hi, ond mae JC yn dangos unwaith eto ei allu i greu sŵn ffresh tu hwnt wrth blethu arddulliau anghymarus, gan wthio ffiniau arddulliau’i gerddoriaeth.

Gwelir hyn ar ei orau ar draciau Sweetjoy a They Eat the Young. Dychmygwch dwy frechdan drwchus o sbarion cinio Dolig a’r blas yn byrlymu ohonynt. Dyma yw’r haen ar ben haen o synau a janglau a geir yma: tu hwnt i ddisgrifiad - rhaid eu profi i’w gwerthfawrogi.

Wedi gwrando ymhellach ar Baby Desert Nobody daw’r berlen gudd yma i’r golwg. Trueni mai cwta munud a hanner mae’n para, ond efallai mai dyna cyfrinach ei hysblander.

Wrth gyrraedd y traciau olaf mae Cruel Joke yn newid y naws. Dyma’r trac sain da chi angen wrth yrru Ford Mustang drwy’r ddinas fawr ddrwg a’r goleuadau neon yn fflachio ar bob llaw. Ac mae I Don’t Wanna Dream About it Anymore yn ddiweddglo buddugoliaethus i gau pen y mwdwl.

Ar y cyfan mae Jam City wedi creu enfys lachar i oleuo a disodli diflastod ein cyfnod clo. Neidiwch fewn i ddal y bitiau bachog, ymgollwch yn nyfnderoedd y seiniau dyfeisgar, ac ewch yn eich blaen heb ofid yn y byd.

A passionate power pop trip into the toybox, Pillowland is Jam City's latest glamorous offering. Murky hyperpop clashes and jangles with heavy drums and the straining strings of electronic guitars pop their head up every now and again. Perhaps this sounds like a jarring mix of styles, and no doubt would be for a lesser producer, but JC proves again that he can create a fresh sound by blending usually clashing styles to push the boundaries of the genres of his music.

Where this is most abundant are in the tracks Sweetjoy & They Eat The Young. Both are like good, thick, Christmas leftover sandwiches, with layers upon layers of sounds and jangles that would be typically written off when described plainly, but are instantly appreciated when experienced.

During later listens, Baby Desert Nobody revealed itself, having previously been a gem hidden in plain sight. A pity that it is a brief 1 minute 31 seconds, but perhaps this is part of its beauty.

The first of the final trio of tracks, Cruel Joke, paves the way for a change in mood. It is the soundtrack you need for driving a 70s mustang in an inner city lane illuminated by neon signage. I Don't Wanna Dream About It Anymore is the album's triumphant swan song and rounds the album off nicely.

All in all, Jam City has created a rainbow that will illuminate the dreary familiarity of any quarantine bedroom. Come for the catchy pop riffs, stay for the sonic innovation, leave feeling refreshed.
